Advanced Management Systems Eases Transition from HP e3000 with Pervasive PSQL

"My customers count on the reliability of my application to run their wineries, from planting to harvesting to production to the final sale. The migration path I have chosen, which uses the Pervasive PSQL™ database, gives us the lowest business risk possible with the least disruption to what my customers do best – produce fine wines."

About Advanced Management Systems
Founded in 1981, Advanced Management Systems is the premier provider of wine industry information systems. They support and sell the industry’s most comprehensive suite of software supporting a winery from planting a vineyard, taking the customer’s check to the bank, reporting back to investors and everything in between. Their software is built around twenty-five flexible fullfeatured modules, designed to work seamlessly with the others from day one. AMS wrote the software and they own it, so it can be changed to meet the needs of their customers.

Executive Summary
Advanced Management Systems (AMS) sells and supports a winery management package, AMS Software, running on the HP e3000 platform. AMS Software covers all aspects of winery management, including vineyard management, tracking of wine production and manufacturing costs, as well as warehouse management, wholesale order processing and retail sales at the cash register.

The software package is robust, having matured over 20 years, and provides comprehensive functionality required by wineries, wine marketing companies and wine warehouses. AMS supports more than 100 clients throughout the state of California. Clients include Cakebread Cellars, Domaine Chandon, Ferrari-Carano, Joseph Phelps Vineyards, Ravenswood Winery and Wilson Daniels Limited.

Business Challenge
HP announced plans in 2001 to discontinue sales and support of the HP e3000 platform. Integral to the HP e3000 platform is a COBOL language compiler and the TurbolIMAGE/XL database management system (DBMS). The transitions from the e3000 platform involved not only a different operating system, but also a different DBMS as well as a different language compiler. Added to these complexities are issues concerning networking, the user interface, file types specific to the HP e3000, and platform-specific system calls, which HP calls “intrinsics.”

HP’s announcement required application developers to begin evaluating and planning transitions from the e3000 environment to other platforms. Advanced Management Systems faced such a transition.

Said Steve Smith, owner, “Some of my customers will opt to stay on the HP e3000 platform, at least initially. Others will want to migrate to our new Windows solution as soon as possible. I must be able to support both operating environments economically. My application has more than 1.5 million lines of code. I don’t want to maintain two sets of code.”

The Pervasive Solution
Advanced Management Systems decided to port its application to a Windows 2000 server operating environment running Fujitsu NetCOBOL. For the DBMS, AMS selected Pervasive PSQL™ because of its proven reliability and because it allows for the preservation of the application’s native COBOL data organization, which is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to attain with traditional relational database management systems. This resulted in an easier data migration.

Equally important, Advanced Management Systems did not have to change any business logic to use Pervasive PSQL. Although still transitioning the application, they had already converted 100% of their data and completed extensive testing.

“Converting our data was remarkably easy,” Smith said. “We wrote some simple COBOL programs and DOS scripts to create empty Pervasive PSQL data files, and then populated the files with data from the 3000 without rearranging a single bit. The data transfer to the new server and file loading was accomplished primarily with simple Reflection scripts and a single small COBOL program that directly calls the Pervasive navigational.

“With our data migrated to the new platform, we have seen a tremendous performance increase in our application. A report that takes two hours to generate on the HP e3000 takes 45 seconds with the Pervasive-based application. Part of that remarkable speed increase is attributable to the different processing speeds of the servers, and part is attributable to Pervasive PSQL.”

Wilson Daniels Limited, a wine and spirits marketing company, has used the AMS system for years on the HP e3000 but is looking forward to the new Windowsbased system.

“The HP e3000 and the AMS system have played a vital role in our high-end wine and spirits marketing business,” said Ross Owen, director of IT, Wilson Daniels Limited. “The reliability of the HP e3000 has been remarkable, providing years of cost-effective service, but we are looking forward to using the AMS system on a server with higher performance. The new Windows-based user interface will also be a welcome change. Pervasive PSQL will give us direct access to the data in the AMS system which will simplify the maintenance of the Web site we have developed for our employees and business partners.”

In addition to giving his clients direct access to their data for report writing and Web development, Smith has plans to migrate parts of his application from the Pervasive navigational interface to Pervasive’s SQL interface over time. For that, he will take advantage of the relational engine embedded in Pervasive PSQL. “Once we move our clients to the new platform, we can gradually make further improvements to the software. Changing our software to use SQL access instead of navigational access will require significant recoding and testing,” Smith said. “I need to be able to make these changes in a gradual non-disruptive way. Pervasive PSQL makes this possible with minimum cost and business risk.”

Bottom Line
Advanced Management Systems has ported its application data to a different operating system quickly and painlessly. By retaining the native COBOL data organization through Pervasive PSQL, they had to change no business logic and shortened their migration time.

When SQL access and Web-enabling are required, Pervasive PSQL offers the tools and interfaces necessary to ease the addition of those features. Plus Pervasive PSQL brings a low total cost of ownership solution for those investing in migrations.
