Edmunds & Associates Governs Data with Ease

"We tried other database solutions when we moved to a pure Java development environment, but in the end we came back to Pervasive to retain our high level of customer satisfaction. Pervasive.SQL's simplicity, performance and reliability just can't be matched by any other database."

Bob Edmunds, President, Edmunds & Associates, Inc.

About Edmunds & Associates, Inc.
Edmunds & Associates was founded in 1972 as a U.S. Department of Defense software development contractor. Nearly a decade later when the government changed its contracting procedures, the company decided to refocus its product direction and did so successfully. Since then, it has built a thriving business by providing financial applications for local government entities. More than 400 local governments, including Newark, Atlantic City and Union County, New Jersey, now depend on its systems to help them more effectively handle their financial responsibilities and daily operations. Edmunds' success is directly attributed to trust, reliability and constantly searching for new ways to improve the performance of its solutions.

Business Challenge
Edmunds clients bill, collect and manage more than $70,625,000,000.00 in public funds. With high volumes of transactions, the data-management needs of these government entities can be overwhelming. Failure to properly track and maintain this data could have disastrous effects on the communities they serve.

In its market, like most, customer support is vitally important. Bob Edmunds, president, predicts that 90 percent of his new customers leave their previous vendors because of support issues. Before Pervasive, Edmunds customers sometimes struggled with data integrity and constantly had to restore from backup anytime a system error occurred. As many as 30 support calls a day came in needing assistance restoring backups due to corrupted or unstable data files. Edmunds was challenged with providing the best service in the business to ensure its customers wouldn't turn to another vendor.

Adding to the challenges, in the late 1990s, Edmunds began to develop completely in Java and needed a database that worked flawlessly in such an environment. At the time, its version of Pervasive.SQL did not have a JDBC driver so the decision was made to try other database solutions. According to Vito Paladino, vice president of Product Development, the other products were compatible with Java, but were not as easy to use or as functional. "Oracle was expensive and complicated; Interbase just wasn't getting the job done; Cloudscape's (now IBM Informix) claim to fame was being a pure Java database but was not very robust," he said.

With the introduction of a more robust Pervasive.SQL 2000 that enabled Java development with a JDBC driver, Edmunds came back to Pervasive to increase its solutions' ease of maintenance, stability, performance and functionality. Only by doing so could it maintain high customer satisfaction and consistent yearly growth.

The Pervasive Solution
Now utilizing Pervasive.SQL V8, Java development capabilities are further increased with JDBC and Java Class Library interfaces. The Pervasive JDBC driver is a Java-certified driver and JDBC 2 compliant supporting thread-safe operations, JNDI support, connection pooling and scrollable result sets. The Pervasive Java Class Library also interfaces directly to Btrieve to perform massive inserts.

When asked why Pervasive is well suited for Java environments, Paladino replied, "Simplicity and performance! It's embedded, easy to install and has everything we need and nothing we don't. It's completely reliable and gets the job done."

Pervasive also enables Edmunds to offer solutions to clients with varying platforms. "Pervasive offers us platform versatility, enabling us to serve customers we might not have been able to otherwise," Paladino said.

With this comprehensive technology, Edmunds has built applications for: financial accounting, electronic purchase requisitions, inventory and warehousing, payroll, human resources, real estate property tax, and utility billing and collections. These areas span the range of customer needs, and the Pervasive client/server engine and database offer unprecedented functionality and dependability.

Bottom Line
According to Bob Edmunds, the benefits of Pervasive are numerous: easy installation, embeddability, low administration and total cost of ownership, increased performance, reliability and scalability. These benefits have directly contributed to his company's successful increase in customer satisfaction. "Pervasive is cost competitive, gives us all the functionality and performance we need, and helps us offer the best solutions to our clients," he said.

Since utilizing Pervasive, Edmunds' in-coming support calls – which used to run as high as 30 a day for data integrity or data corruption issues – have been reduced to a fraction of that with almost a total elimination of downtime and database corruption. Besides the obvious increase in customer satisfaction that has resulted, operational expenses have also been reduced due to the low number of support calls that require human assistance.

Edmunds clients are now more confident that the financial computer systems they and their communities depend on for efficient and accurate day-to-day operations will be available when they are needed most. Thanks to Pervasive, erratic application stability is no longer hindering Edmunds' ability to deliver best-in-the-industry solutions, high customer satisfaction and record growth.
